Q. When are tax bills sent out?

A. The 2010 Chester County tax bill was sent out January 15th, 2010.

Q. To whom do I make my check payable?

A. All tax bills have the following information printed on the remittance portion: PLEASE MAKE CHECK PAYABLE TO: CHESTER COUNTY TREASURER

Q. What should I do if I do not receive a tax bill and I do not have a mortgage?

A. It is the responsibility of every property owner in Chester County to meet their tax obligation.  If you have not received a tax bill, for example, because it was lost in the postal system, accidentally damaged or destroyed, or even delivered to an incorrect address, contact our office during normal business hours and speak with a representative about how to correct the problem.

Remember, the ultimate responsibility for payment of the real estate tax in Chester County rests with the property owner even though they may not have received their tax bill.

Note:   If there has been a change of address, and this is causing your tax bill to be mailed to an incorrect address, the property owner must contact the County Assessment Office to complete the required forms to change the mailing address.  Also, it is the responsibility of the property owner to contact the Treasurer's Office in order to notify us of this change so that the tax bill can then be mailed to the correct address.

Q. To whom are tax bills usually sent?

A. Tax bills are normally sent to the owner of record (property owner).

However, if your property is mortgaged, one of two billing events can occur, but only one:

Case 1 (electronically billed):

If the property owner has a mortgage, and the mortgage company (or a tax service company working on behalf of the mortgage company) has arranged for electronic billing, then the bill is placed on a list which the bank/mortgage company/service company receives electronically.  The property owner's payment is normally through escrowed funds withheld during the mortgage payment process.  The property owner does not receive a copy of the bill.

Case 2 (tax bill is mailed directly to the property owner):

The tax bill is sent to the property owner, who is then responsible for sending the bill to the mortgage company for payment.

Q. What are the tax due dates for annual County taxes?

A. For County annual tax bills, we have 3 (three) payment periods after the tax bills are mailed on January 15: (1) 60 day 2% discount period from Jan 15 (Due on Mar 16); (2) face value due during the 60 days after the discount payment period (Due May 15); (3) payment made after the face value date incurs a 10 % penalty for payments made up to December 31 of current year.

Q. What is the current millage rate?

A. The current county tax rate is 3.965 (last updated on 01/27/09)

Q. Can I pay my township or school taxes at the Treasurer's Office?

A. No.  For tax bills issued from a separate tax authority, other than the County Treasurer, payment must be remitted to that authority.

Q. Do I have to mail my payment to the Treasurer's Office?

A. No. You may pay through mail or in person, or you may pay at one of the "tax banks" listed on this site.  Click the link to see a list of Tax Payment Locations.

Q. How can I obtain a receipt as proof of payment?

A. Simply provide the top portion of your tax bill along with a self-addressed, stamped  envelope, when mailing your payment.  The top portion is stamped "PAID", and returned in your SASE.

Q. Does the Treasurer's Office collect School or other taxes?

A. No.  Please return to the FAQ Index and select the link for Other Real Estate Taxes.
