The Chester County Gleaning Program was established in the summer of 1996. The Gleaning Program supplies fresh produce planted by local farmers and organizations and harvested by a network of volunteers of all ages. The produce is donated and distributed to County food providers and agencies.
{Residents Working in Garden} Through the participation of more than 500 volunteers, fresh produce is distributed to more than 30 County food provider agencies.
In 2001 the Pocopson Home became a part of the Gleaning network. Through the support of the Community Gardens of Chester County, this project became a reality for the Home's residents and staff. A large raised garden was built for the Home's residents so they can contribute to the growing effort. {Lady Working in Garden}
Tomatoes, corn, squash, peppers, herbs, and other various vegetables and flowers have been planted. As produce is harvested, the Home's residents will reap some of the rewards and a portion of the harvest will also be donated to the Salvation Army in West Chester, PA. |
