U.S. Army LogoWilliam Thomas Johnson was born in Nebraska to Mr. and Mrs. W. Thomas Johnson in 1918.  He was of 6 children, the second oldest of 4 brothers; Wayne, William, Eardley, and Paul; and sisters, Edith and Edna.

His family moved to West Chester in 1937, and lived on the S.F. Sharpless Street Road, Westtown. His father became the gardener and caretaker of the estate. William obtained employment at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Chester.

William was known as a good son, and diligent worker.  He was a member of the West Chester Church of the Nazarene (200 West Union St.), were he was active in Young Peoples and Sunday School work.

William entered the Army on June 18, 1943 and after basic and advanced training was sent overseas in February. 

Private First Class William Thomas Johnson was Killed In Action on July 29th 1944 in New Guinea.

His parents had just received a letter from their son on July 24th, telling them he was in the thick of battle “we are in it”, but assured them he was all right.

A memorial service was held on Sunday November 11, 1944 at the Church of the Nazarene by pastor Henry H. Reeves.

His brother Wayne served in the Army in the European theater and was wounded 3 times.  His brother, Eardley served in the Navy.
