Navy LogoSamuel Neeld was born on July 1, 1925 to Benjamin T. and Marian B. Neeld who lived in Granogue, Delaware.  The family moved to 606 South Church St in West Chester, Pennsylvania.   He was one of two children, including sister Eleanor.

Samuel attended the West Chester High School, then located at the corner of Church and Biddle Streets.  He left school his junior year to help support the family.  Samuel obtained employment at Sun Ship Company in Chester, where his father worked. He attended the Nazarene Church at Darlington and Dean Streets in the borough.

Samuel enlisted in the Navy in March 1943.  He received basic training at Bainbridge, Maryland, then additional training at Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago.

Samuel received orders to travel to California for sea duty in September, and was granted a leave.  The travel time only allowed him 2 days to visit his family.

Seaman Second Class Samuel Neeld was Killed In Action at an undisclosed location in the Pacific Theater on January 21, 1944.

Samuel was buried at Rockwood Cemetery in Sydney, Australia.  In 1948, he was disinterred to be returned for burial in his home country.  He body arrived in San Francisco in February.

Services were held on Friday March 5th at Archie S. Maclean’s funeral home at 5th Ave. and Main Streets in Coatesville (his parents had moved to Marshallton).   Interment was at the Bradford Cemetery, in Marshallton, off Clayton Road.
