Army LogoGeorge C. Mahers  was born in 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John and Pearl Mahers.  His family originated from Michigan, moved to Philadelphia, then to Ring Rd, in Morstein, Pennsylvania.  Morstein is a small development off Boot Rd, outside of West Chester.

George was one of six children: John A, Lewis, George, Frances, William, and Florence.

His father worked as a laborer in a Lime Plant, as did his oldest son John A.

 

Greenwood SchoolGeorge attended the Greenwood School, which was then located at King and Ship Roads (replaced in 1941 with a new school located at Ship Rd. and Rt. 30.)

George obtained employment at the Nachman Spring Factory, which made automobile springs.  The factory was located at 260 East Market St. in West Chester.

He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Malvern.

 

Fourth Armored Division IsigniaGeorge was inducted into the Army in 1941.  After training and service in this country, he was sent overseas to the European Theater in 1943.  He served in the Fourth Armored Division of General Patton’s Third Army. The last letter his family received from George was dated April 9th  in Germany.

Technical Fifth grade George C. Mahers was Killed In Action on Friday April 13, 1945.

 On Friday April 27th, his mother received the telegram from the Army notifying her of her son’s death. George was buried at a local military cemetery.

In 1949, George was returned for burial in his home county.  A Memorial Service was held at the Mauger Funeral home in Malvern on Saturday January 8, 1949.  Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, followed by interment at St. Agnes Cemetery in West Chester (on Rt. 100 just North of the town.)

Brothers William and John both served in the Army during the war.
