Norman moved to West Chester to attend High School and resided with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Fling at 110 Price Street,and attended West Chester High School. He graduatied with the Class of 1941. The yearbook writes of Norman: Norman came to this school from Chadds Ford at the beginning of his juior year and has done well here. He is active in most sorts. Although he plans to go to business college to become and accountant, he has hopes of soeday crashing Big League baseball. Norman was described in the local paper, the Daily Local News, as “An outstanding athlete and a good student.” And “He made many friends through baseball and often received the praise of opponents as well as local followers.” He lettered in baseball for two years playing the position of catcher. He also played that position on the Bernard Schlegel Post, American Legion, which reached Regional finals in a State Tournament. Norman was given a try-out in a Southern baseball league, however he returned to West Chester, after playing in a few games. Norman was inducted into the Army on March 9, 1942. He received training at Camp Butner, North Carolina, and Fort, Meade Maryland. While at Camp Meade, Norman played baseball with a number of former Major League stars. Norman was attached to a Quartermaster unit when he was sent overseas to Italy in June 1944. He transferred to the infantry joining the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division. Private Norman George Becker was Killed In Action on October 14, 1944. He was buried in the Florence American Cemetery, in Florence Italy.
Mrs. Daniel Leary who lived on Lacey Street in West Chester, received a letter from Norman on September 8th. Her two sons, William and Thomas were teammates and great friends. Her letter to Norman was returned bearing a notice that he was deceased. Norman served and died in the same area as hero Michael Barnes and William Taylor. Norman’s brother, William served in the Navy during the War.
