Morris
L. Sollinger was born in 1920 to William and Martha P. Sollinger
who lived on Schuylkill Road in East Vincent Township, Pennsylvania. Morris
was second born of four brothers: Woodrow, Morris, Charles and Gerald.Morris attended Spring City Schools, completing Grammar School. Public education in that era, involved Grammar School (1st – 8th) and High School(9th – 12th), there was typically no middle school or junior high school. Morris became a member of the Spring City Lutheran Church, today the Zion Lutheran Church located at 39 Bonnie Brae Road.
He found employment with the Sun Ship Company in Chester. Morris was inducted into the Army on December 2, 1944. He received training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was sent overseas to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) with only 17 weeks of training, and assigned to a unit in the Ninth Army. Morris participated in combat in Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium. He was wounded in Belgium, hospitalized and after recovering, returned to duty in early 1945. Private First Class Morris L. Sollinger was Killed In Action on March 2, 1945 in Germany. His mother received the government telegram on Wednesday March 14th. The same day she received a letter from Morris, in which he wrote he was well and not to worry. He also said he was sending his Purple Heart home.
