George
Messner was born in 1922 to Solomon and Amanda Messner who lived
in Morstein, Pennsylvania, a small development off Boot Rd, outside of West
Chester.He was one of three children, including a sister and brother James. George married Margaret Thompson in Frazer George joined the Pennsylvania National Guard, Company I, 111th Infantry, and “West Chester's Own”. The Company was activated for Active Military Duty in 1940. He trained at various camps in the states; he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Virginia in October 1943. He was shipped overseas to the Pacific Theater of operations in December 1943. He was later sent to the Florida Island in the Solomon Island group (Florida Island is very close to Tulagi - just north of Guadalcanal, and where Hero George Johnson died on August 7, 1942.) George was wounded on October 17, 1944 in the Central Pacific area. He was hospitalized in Hawaii. Private First Class George Messner Died Of Wounds on October 23, 1944. George was buried in a local military cemetery, and his body was brought back in 1949 for reburial in his home country. Funeral services were held Keim & Wilson Funeral Home, 107 W. Lancaster Ave, Downingtown on Saturday January 8th. Interment was at the St. Pauls Reformed Cemetery in Uwchlan.
