Gary D. JefferisGary Dwight Jefferis was born on August 11, 1945 and was a 1965 graduate of Great Valley Senior High School.  Prior to entering the service, he was employed by Delong Construction Inc. in West Whiteland.  He was also a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church.

According to a telegram received on Wednesday morning, September 7th, 1966 by Gary's parents,  he died on Tuesday, September 8th due to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.  On September 6th, 1966, a vehicle in which Gary was a passenger skidded out of control and overturned due to inclement weather.  S-4 Jefferis was assigned to the First Air Calvary Division, D Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Calvary.  He was drafted in October 1965 and had been in Vietnam for three weeks prior to his death.  He was twenty-four years old at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the Hopewell Methodist Church.

Gary is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Jefferis of 45 Lloyd Avenue, Malvern.  He is also survived by his three brothers and sisters.  At the time of his death, his brother Dallas was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia.  Dallas was a 1964 graduate of Great Valley High Senior School and entered the service in July.  Donald D. Sr. lived at 712 South New Street, West Chester. His third brother Dennis lived at home. Two sisters Joyce and Joan lived at home and attended Great Valley Senior High School.  His third sister Janice Faye is married to Charles LeGar and lives in Malvern.

 

Gary was also survived by his paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Alex Jefferis of Lyndell and his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Kirkner of Exton.
