Keeping American Healthy, A Catalog of Successful Programs

The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, a national coalition of patient, provider and community organizations; business and labor groups; and health policy experts, recently released an online catalog of successful programs aimed at improving wellness and staving off chronic disease. Acknowledging that "effective population health improvement strategies consider the range of physical, environmental and socioeconomic factors that contribute to health," the report identifies exemplary programs based on outcomes data demonstrating health improvements or progress toward other goals, sustainability and replicability. The selected programs span a range of settings, including schools, the workplace, communities and health systems, and share nine essential markers of success.

Highmark Inc. moves forward with funding for physician adoption of health information technology

Highmark Inc. announced that it is contributing $29 million to help physicians acquire ePrescribing/eHealth Record technology for their practices.  By eliminating handwriting interpretation and administrative work associated with paper processing, integrated electronic technology with ePrescribing and electronic health records capabilities can help ensure patient safety and reduce medical errors and expenses. Such technology systems can also indicate medications that could adversely interact with other drugs.

Highmark considers its initiative to be a critical step toward full utilization of electronic health records and the facilitation of health information exchanges that will improve access to patients' medical histories, including medications, test results and care-management programs.

The Diabetes Initiative: Stories and Descriptions of 14 Programs to Improve Self Management

Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP)

Application deadline: July 11, 2008
The Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP) is a loan repayment program for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who serve as faculty at eligible health professions schools for a minimum of two years. In return, the Federal Government agrees to pay up to $20,000 of the outstanding principal and interest on the individual's education loans for each year of service. This program is designed to increase the number of faculty from disadvantaged backgrounds who act as role models and mentors for students from similar backgrounds. Hence, faculty, as used in this section, means a position that is primarily teaching, rather than administrative or research. The employing school must also make payments of principal and interest to the faculty member in an amount equal to the amount of such quarterly payments made by the HHS Secretary for each year in which the recipient serves as a faculty member. The Secretary may waive the school's matching requirements if the Secretary determines it will impose an undue financial hardship on the school.

Improving Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Interventions and Programs in Low Income Adult Populations

Application deadline: November 24, 2008

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), encourages research grant applications for projects designed to improve outcomes of smoking cessation in low income adult populations within the United States. Despite significant progress in reducing the prevalence of smoking in the United States, smoking continues to represent a major threat to public health. In addition, decreases in smoking have not been consistent across the population and marked disparities exist with smoking prevalence continuing to remain high among low-income adults. The long-term goal is to facilitate a significant reduction in smoking prevalence among low-income adults, thereby reducing the excess disease burden of tobacco use within these groups and decreasing the prevalence of smoking in the United States as a whole. This FOA is intended to support human research only.
