Department of Health Continues Statewide Distribution of H1N1 Vaccine

The Department of Health announced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, has allocated more than 566,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine to Pennsylvania. While delays in vaccine production have occurred, the department is placing orders as soon as vaccine is allocated to ensure it reaches Pennsylvania residents as quickly as possible. 2009 Pulse of Pennsylvania’s Dentist and Dental Hygienist Workforce Report

The Department of Health recently released this report as part of a series of Special Reports on Pennsylvania’s Health Care Workforce.  These reports provide lawmakers, researchers, academics, and state agencies with objective, factual data concerning the characteristics of health professional populations in the Commonwealth. This report, along with previous reports on licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, physicians and physician assistants, can be accessed at SHIP Health Care Work Force Reports.

 

Community Primary Care Challenge Grant (CCG) RFA #08-07-08

Deadline: December 23, 2009

The overall goal of this funding is to increase access to primary medical and dental care for underserved populations by increasing the number of primary care health care practitioners and the number of primary care medical and/or dental clinics. The complete Request for Application (RFA) can be downloaded by clicking the link at the bottom of the website.

Novel H1N1 Flu and HIV-Infected Adults and Adolescents – Podcast

In this podcast, Dr. John Brooks, of CDC's HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, discusses CDC's Interim Guidance for HIV-infected adults and adolescents regarding the novel H1N1 flu virus.

 

World Stroke Day

October 29 was World Stroke Day. World Stroke Day is an excellent opportunity to increase awareness of stroke, and action that can be taken against it. This website provides several resources to promote the World Stroke Day message to include in campaigns for the general population, press releases, communication with government and/or community activities.

 

Teen Driver Safety
October 18-24 was National Teen Driver Safety Week. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. Research suggests that the most comprehensive graduated drivers licensing (GDL) programs are associated with reductions of 38% and 40% in fatal and injury crashes, respectively, among 16-year-old drivers.

 

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, a milestone in our Nation’s struggle to end violence against women. The Department of Justice and the Office on Violence Against Women joins advocates, survivors, and communities around the country to observe October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is a moment to elevate the conversation so the majority of Americans will understand that violence against women and girls is unacceptable.

Preventing Violence Against Women: Program Activities Guide

The Preventing Violence Against Women: Program Activities Guide describes CDC’s public health activities and research to prevent violence against women. The CDC’s Intimate Partner Violence website provides several resources and tools for communities.

 

Vaccine Supply Status

Nationwide distribution of the H1N1 (Swine) flu vaccine is underway to all states. Approximately 6 million doses have been shipped throughout the United States. A weekly update on the vaccine supply and shipment status, complete with state-by-state numbers, is now available on the CDC website.

 

Updated CDC Asthma Management and Prevention Slides/Speaker Notes Available
The updated version of Asthma: A Presentation of Asthma Management and Prevention, a 75-slide presentation with speaker notes, is now available. It depicts the pathophysiology of asthma; prevention, mortality and morbidity measures at the national level; risk factors; prevention; medical management; and the public health response needed to successfully fight asthma.

 

Promotional Tools Increase Awareness of Clinical Trials
Recently, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced the availability of new, promotional posters and pins for clinical trials. NCI has had requests for the materials to be translated into Spanish and to also have an African American health care provider featured on the English version of the poster. These resources are available in the “Collections” section; see the “Ask Me About Clinical Trials” link.

 Oldways Sponsors the Latino Nutrition Coalition (LNC)

The LNC creates practical, culturally-aware materials in English and Spanish that help Latinos combine the best of their healthy food traditions with the realities of modern American life. Examples of these materials include the Latin American Diet Pyramid and the Camino Mágico Supermarket Guide. Oldways also includes information on the Mediterranean Diet and links to culturally relevant Food Pyramids.

AHRQ Releases New Fact Sheet on Disparities in Health Care Quality
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released a new fact sheet, Disparities in Health Care Quality Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups: Findings From the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports, 2008.  It shows that despite improvements there are still differences in health care quality among racial and minority groups and low-income families experiencing poorer quality of care.

 

Availability of Less Nutritious Snack Foods and Beverages in Secondary Schools -Selected States, 2002-2008
School food environments and practices that promote consumption of less nutritious foods and beverages are associated with poorer diets and higher body mass index among students. The findings in this report indicate that progress was made during 2002-2008 in increasing the percentage of secondary schools in which students cannot purchase less nutritious foods and beverages from vending machines at the school or from a school store, canteen, or snack bar.

 

CDC Recommended Community Strategies and Measurements to Prevent and Control Obesity in the United States

This report provides recommendations to help communities tackle the problem of obesity through environmental change and policies, such as increasing the availability and affordability of healthier food options.

 

State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables, 2009

This report provides information for each state on how many fruits and vegetables people are eating, and it highlights three key areas within communities and schools that can be improved to increase access, availability, and affordability of fruits and vegetables.

 

Timing of Meals May Affect Weight Gain

Mice fed a high-fat diet during their normal sleep and rest period gained significantly more weight than mice fed the same diet during their active hours, a new study shows. The finding suggests that when we eat may influence how we pack on pounds.

The Mary Byron Project, a national organization working to address the root causes of domestic violence and help build safer, healthier communities, created the Celebrating Solutions Awards to honor local innovations that demonstrate promise in breaking the cycle of violence. The awards program seeks to showcase programs that can serve as models for the nation.

 

Preventing Unintentional Childhood Injuries (R21)

Letter of Intent Due: December 7, 2009

Application Deadline: January 8, 2010

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages research that will build the scientific base for the prevention of unintentional injuries to children, 0 -19 years. This FOA addresses “Healthy People 2010” priority area(s) of injury and violence prevention and the NCIPC’s research agenda, and is in alignment with NCIPC performance goal(s) to increase the capacity of injury prevention and control programs. It also supports CDC’s performance goals of prevention research involving sustainable and transferable community-based interventions.

 

Public Health Conference Support Program

Deadline: December 11, 2009

CDC’s Procurement and Grants Office has published a funding opportunity announcement entitled, “NCBDDD Public Health Conference Support Program.” Approximately $ 100,000 will be available in fiscal year 2010 to fund 1-12 awards. The purpose of this FOA is to provide partial support for specific non-Federal conferences in the areas of health promotion, disease prevention, and educational programs.

 

Home Depot Accepting Applications for Building Healthy Communities Grant Program

Deadline: December 15, 2009

The Home Depot's Building Healthy Communities Grant Program awards grants of up to $2,500 to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, public schools, and tax-exempt public service agencies in the United States that are using the power of volunteers to improve the physical health of their community. Grants are made in the form of Home Depot gift cards for the purchase of tools or materials.

 

Kresge Foundation Healthy Environments Grants

Deadline: Ongoing

Funding to improve the health and well being of vulnerable children from low-income families by making the places they live, learn and play safe and supportive of overall good health.
