Your water will be tested for Total Coliform. Coliform bacteria generally are harmless bacteria that live naturally in the intestines of humans, aiding in the functioning of the body.
If coliform bacteria are in your water, then bacteria and viruses that can make you sick also may be contaminating your water supply. The source of coliform bacteria contamination in ground (well) water can be from surface water, on-lot sewage systems or agricultural runoff.
The total coliform bacteria test is used to determine if bacterial contamination is present. The acceptable level is for no coliform bacteria to be present. If coliform is detected in your well water, you'll be given directions to disinfect your water supply.
You can also have your water tested at any of the five DEP-Certified Laboratories in the County.
