COURTS
The Court of Common Pleas of Chester County is a general jurisdiction trial court located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. There are eleven full time judges and one senior judge. The judges hear a wide spectrum of cases, including adult and juvenile criminal prosecutions, lawsuits involving money or property, divorce, custody disputes, child support issues, adoptions, and estates. In addition to court staff and court administration, the court supervises Adult Probation, Juvenile Probation, Domestic Relations, Bail Agency, Court Reporters, and the Law Library. The Court oversees and provides administrative services to the seventeen district justice offices that comprise the District Justice system in Chester County.

{Judge Robert J. Shenkin}        Judge Shenkin was born in Philadelphia in 1944 and has lived in Chester County since 1972.  He is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he was Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook and a member of the Druids and Sphinx, the Senior and Junior men’s honorary societies.  He received his J.D. with distinction from Duke University School of Law in 1970 where he won the American Jurisprudence Award in Jurisprudence and was a member of the National Moot Court Team.  Judge Shenkin has completed the General Jurisdiction Course of the National Judicial College and other continuing judicial education courses from the Judicial Education Program of the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies.
 
       Judge Shenkin was elected as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in November 1989 and retained in November 1999 for a second 10-year term. Prior to becoming a judge, he was in private practice for 20 years with the firm of MacElree, Harvey, Gallagher & Featherman, Ltd. where he engaged in the general practice of law. Prior to that Judge Shenkin was law clerk to the Honorable Herbert S. Levin.
 
       Judge Shenkin served on the Board of Supervisors of West Whiteland Township for over 11 years.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alan Ameche Memorial Foundation and a former member of the Board of Trustees of Delaware Valley Friends School, Paoli, Pa.
 
       He is a member of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges and of the American, Pennsylvania, and Chester County Bar Associations.  He has served two terms as a member of the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.  Additionally, he has served on numerous national, state and local bar association committees.  He formerly chaired the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Committee on Mandatory Continuing Legal Education and the Association’s Municipal Law Section. 
 
     He is married to Susan W. Shenkin, Esq. and has two children, Matt and Emily.
