Chester County Local Food Guide Launched

WEST CHESTER_ The Chester County Agricultural Development Council introduced the new Buy Fresh Buy Local food guide at Wednesday’s Chester County Commissioners’ Meeting.

Developed by the Agricultural Development Council in partnership with FoodRoutes Network and local Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters, the guide features farms, farmers, county agencies and restaurants in the region committed to strengthening Chester County’s food system.  Farm stands, farm stores and farmers’ markets are included alongside Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operations, specialty producers and retail outlets.

Chester County residents increasingly want to know where to find healthy, locally-grown food, and this guide connects them directly to farms, markets and restaurants where local food is sold,” said Chester County Commissioner Chair Terence Farrell.

“One of our strategic priorities is to promote a ‘Healthy Community’ in Chester County.  More and more, our citizens are looking to use their food dollars wisely, to purchase locally grown produce. This guide is valuable in helping to locate all local food sources in the county.  The partnership between the organizations that contributed to this guide will help keep Chester County farmers farming and the land in agricultural production, and I thank the Agricultural Development Council on their leadership of the project,” added Commissioner Kathi Cozzone.

“Agriculture continues to be a very important part of Chester County’s economy, and earlier this year the County reached a benchmark of 25,000 acres of farmland preserved, ranking us fourth in the nation for total number of acres preserved,” said Commissioner Carol Aichele.

Chester County Buy Fresh Buy Local lists more than 80 food producers in Chester County that have farm fresh and seasonal products available to the public.  A map of all the locations is also included in the guide.

The food guide is free and is available at Chester County public libraries, Chester County parks, the Government Services Center on Westtown Road in West Chester, by phone (610-344-6285) or e-mail.   The guide can also be viewed and printed from the Chester County Agricultural Development Council web site by selecting the link titled “Local Food Guide”.
